World Book Day - extra information
Dear Parents & Carers,
Please see e-mail sent on 12.2.26 re: World Book Day with additional information added.
At De Lucy, we will be celebrating in a number of ways:
- Children may come to school dressed as their favourite book character
- Or children may come to school dressed in their PJs ready for a bedtime story!
- Book swap shop – children can bring a good quality book from home to swap for a different nearly new book.
- Storytime Assembly
- Book activities in class
We hope that this will further raise the profile of reading for pleasure for our pupils as we know that the best way to improve children’s learning and life outcomes, is by ensuring they are readers.
The children were spoken to about World Book Day in our Senior Leadership Assembly yesterday. The children will be allowed to come to school dressed as a favourite book character (we talked about homemade costumes and accessories as there is no expectation to buy a costume) or wearing their PJs ready for a bedtime story. Some of our older children asked about wearing slippers; we have said yes but they must be ones which are closed toed with a back and brought in a bag to school to change into as they aren’t suitable for outdoor wear!
Due to its popularity last year, we will be holding our own De Lucy pop-up book shop again. If your child has a book or comic at home in good condition that is no longer needed, then they can bring this into school from Wednesday 25th February and exchange it for a book token. This can then be exchanged for a preloved book/comic at the pop-up book shop on Thursday 5th March. If your child does not have a book to donate, then they can still visit the pop-up book shop and buy a book/comic for 50p. Any proceeds will go back into the school library for all children to enjoy.
On the day, the children will take part in some reading activities in class and a story time assembly. As a school, we continue to be committed to ensuring that all of our children are able to read at an appropriate level and pace: this is not just so that they can enjoy reading but to ensure that are also able to read to learn. We want our children to have the skills to read, use their reading skills to learn in all curriculum areas and gain enjoyment from doing so. This is no easy task in our ever-growing digital world!
We look forward to seeing all of the children taking part in World Book Day.
Kind regards,
Mrs Richardson
