Times Tables Rock Stars

Dear Parents and Carers,

As many of you know, at De Lucy we have subscribed to and promote the use of ‘Times Tables Rock Stars’, also known as TTRS. It is a carefully sequenced online programme of times tables practice games aimed at children in Years 3-6. We encourage Year 2 to use their partner programme ‘Numbots’ until they complete all the Numbots stories and have been taught multiplication and division in the spring term.

By the end of Year 4, all children are expected to fluently recall all of their times tables up to 12x12. Nationally, children sit a times table check where they need to answer 25 questions, each in under 6 seconds.

Building strong recall of times tables and division facts creates a solid foundation for learning in maths. When children know their times tables well, they are able to work more quickly and accurately which supports them with other areas of their maths, such as fractions and helps them tackle more challenging maths problems as they move through the school.

The focus of Times Tables Rock Stars is to:

  • Support children to learn their times tables and the associated division facts

  • Increase the speed and accuracy of multiplication recall

  • Prepare children for their times table check in year 4

The children have become familiar with using this to improve their rapid recall of times table facts. They enjoy competing against one another and across the whole school in battles. Our expectation as a school is that children play every day for 5 minutes (Monday to Thursday)- little and often is the key! One of the main features of TTRS is children completing their heat map, when they are confident with answering a times table within a few seconds it will turn green. When all calculations on the heat map are green, they have “gone green”. Children will then be presented with a certificate and special De Lucy badge for them to proudly wear on their uniform.

If any children do not have access to a device to complete this at home, we will allocate them time on a Friday afternoon in golden time to do this as we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop their number skills.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself. All of this information and a clear guide can be found on our school website: https://www.delucyprimaryschool.co.uk/Times-Table-Rock-Stars-17032020144654/

Yours Sincerely

Mrs Rutley
