Numbots (Year 1 & 2)

Dear Parents and Carers,

As many of you know, at De Lucy we have subscribed to and promote the use of ‘NumBots’. It is a carefully sequenced online programme aimed at children in Reception-year 2 supporting them in practising their number bonds. (We encourage Year 2 to use their partner programme ‘Times Table Rock Stars’ once they have completed all the Numbots stories and have been taught multiplication and division in the spring term).

Learning number bonds is a very important part of developing children’s confidence with maths. Number bonds help children understand how numbers work together, for example knowing that 10 can be made from 6 and 4. It also helps them with addition, subtraction and mental maths, building a strong foundation for more challenging maths as they move through the school. When children know their number bonds well, they are able to solve maths problems more quickly and accurately.

The focus of NumBots is to

-          Support children to learn their number bonds up to 20

-          Increase the speed and accuracy of number bond recall

Within NumBots there are two types of game:

Story Mode – the emphasis is on learning the ideas and concepts behind addition and subtraction so it features more diagrams, shapes and question styles.

Challenge Mode – the emphasis is more on speed of recall of key facts, like number bonds to 10, doubling small numbers or adding & taking away in your head.

Our expectation as a school is that children play every day for 5 minutes (Monday to Thursday)- little and often is the key! We have now ordered special badges for children to wear on their uniform when they complete levels gold, diamond and platinum!

If any children do not have access to a device to complete this at home, we will allocate them time on a Friday afternoon in golden time to do this as we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop their number skills.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself. All of this information and a clear guide can be found on our school website: https://www.delucyprimaryschool.co.uk/Home-Learning/Numbots/

Yours Sincerely

Mrs Rutley
